The Urban Tarot

“Too often we are told that magic and wisdom belong only to the forgotten forests, the places untouched by human hands, and to ages long lost to memory.

I reject this idea. I look around my world, and I see the beauty, the wonder, the magic in the metropolis, the power under the pavement.

I created The Urban Tarot upon the belief that the ideas and truths referred to by the Tarot are eternal and universal, even if many of the images and symbols that have become connected to the cards no longer resonate with a modern reader. What once might have seemed familiar to the layperson of centuries ago is now arcane and confusing. The Urban Tarot is an attempt to reclaim the power of that old magic and bring it within the reach of the 21st century seeker of truth.

The deck began its life in 2003, during my senior year at Parsons School of Design. At the time, I was mostly unfamiliar with the Tarot, and I did not personally own a deck. I was commissioned, along with three other artists, to create a Tarot deck that was intended to be a tie-in product to a role-playing game. Although the original project fell through, I found myself drawn to the images of the Tarot as an illustrative challenge. Over the years, I often found myself wishing I could return to the project and see the deck completed.

In 2012, I ran a campaign on Kickstarter to raise funds to finally complete the deck. Hundreds of people came forward to support and be a part of the project, and the campaign not only met its goal, but ended up raising much more than I had originally asked for. Humbled and grateful, I began the journey of completing all remaining cards, working on the series full-time for the next three years.

This deck’s structure is based heavily on the Thoth Tarot, conceptualized by Aleister Crowley and painted by Lady Frieda Harris between 1938 and 1943. It uses, with few exceptions, the same card names as the Thoth deck, and has a similar emphasis on the elemental associations within the set. The deck also draws significant inspiration from the older Rider-Waite deck, originally published in 1910 and illustrated by the incomparable Pamela Colman Smith.

The meanings I assign to each card should be considered no more authoritative than anyone else’s. The Tarot is a tradition with centuries of history, and this particular deck is but one small part of that long story. In creating it, I have drawn upon the work of many others, and found meanings through the lens of my own life and the world I live in. I encourage every seeker to do the same, finding their own individual truth in these cards; your interpretations are ultimately as legitimate as my own.

Those who are familiar with the earlier decks and their associated magical traditions are encouraged to find correspondences in this deck which reference those older systems. Those who are new to the Tarot are encouraged to seek their own truths in the images contained here; to find resonances to their own life and to the world around them. All readers are encouraged to let their intuition be their guide, and to see the miraculous in the mundane. ______ Robin Scott

Say Hello to Summer!!!

As Lucky Luna bids adieu to spring, we wanted to share some of the activities and dishes we have enjoyed since our last update.

Negroni Week was a lot of fun as we celebrated this classic cocktail and did a slew of original variations (a new one each day) all in the name of charity. Check out our takes below:

Hop Fresh  House Hop-infused Gin, London Dry Gin, Campari, Sweet Vermouth and Branca Menta

The Rossellini Dry Sherry, Gin, Campari, Sweet Vermouth and Dry Vermouth

Rum and Rye Roni  Smith & Cross Jamaican Overproof Rum, Rye, Campari, Sweet Vermouth and Chocolate Bitters

Agave Garden  Mezcal, Cocchi Americano, Cynar, Aperol, Campari and Angostura Bitters

Poblano Rojo  Gin, Campari, Ancho Chili Liquor, Cynar and Orange Bitters

The Managua  Rum, Dry Vermouth, Velvet Falernum, Campari

And in accordance to our philosophy of consistently finding ways to create and engage the community in arts and services, not just through delicious food and drink, Lucky Luna hosted its first Ladies Swap Meet!  Participants brought in choice items such as clothing, art, books, shoes and more to trade, swap and just give away to other attendees.  The only rule was that items could not be exchanged for money, only other goods or services.  New friendships were formed over piles of clothes, cocktails, and laughter.

Lucky Luna also has been working diligently on setting up our Take-Out Window!

As summer has been approaching with her hot and sunny days and warm nights, we have been experimenting with some cool dishes, savoring spicy Micheladas and enjoying visits from our furry neighbors out for a stroll!

AND we got another slew of Kickstarter out in the mail with one round left!

And received our Best and Most Original Bloody Mary plaques!

Last but not least—- we FINALLY, after a year of requests, have a graffiti-free restaurant!!!!

And so we welcome summer with open arms and eagerly await new surprises, new guests, and new adventures! Happy Summer!!!

Done Kicking, on to More Painting

It has been another jam-packed week for the Lucky crew.

First and foremost, we met our Kickstarter goal!!!! What a rewarding experience to have been able to share the creation of Lucky Luna with so many people AND receive soooooooo much support on top of it all! I don’t know how many times I can say it, but we are truly humbled by the generosity and love shown.  We could not have done it without our amazing friends and family who have been with us through thick and thin, way before Lucky Luna began this journey.  And our fans, what an amazing group of people you are! To believe in us, our vision and our ability to execute it is inspirational, motivational and simply wonderful.

While not staring at our Kickstarter pages and refreshing every 30 seconds, we did manage to do some actual work on Lucky Luna.  The trillion layers of paint that never seemed to end (with more to go yet!) and our first attempt at hanging wallpaper filled our days and nights.  The glimmer of  light came when we were joined by friends who came bearing gifts of congrats, providing us with a well-needed break, and an invitation by another to a lovely wine-tasting, to help us find our perfect California Cab.

Tired but we keep on trekking.  At the end of the day, we wouldn’t have it any other way 🙂      OUR WAY.

Lucky Luna Workout and Diet Routine

A few of the unexpected physical results of starting a restaurant may include:

  • overdeveloped trap and lat muscles from a week worth of painting ceilings and walls
  • nice and tight forearms from a handful 8 hour shifts sanding
  • loose waistbands from too many days forgetting to eat until 10pm intermixed with daily walks with the puppy for much needed fresh air and decompression

It’s true.  Starting a business is not for the faint or weary.  It may result in weight loss, grey hair, and inexplicable bouts of energy and euphoria or paranoia and pessimism.

The key to survival is twofold.

1) It requires awesome friends and family who tell you that you are not crazy and that they believe in you.  They even bring you sandwiches (because they know you probably forgot to eat) or coffee (because they know you’ll be at it for another 6 hours).  They walk your puppy when you need to stay and put on just one more coat before you can leave.  They tell other people how rad they think you are and how they have watched you cultivate and develop your vision for years.  They perfectly time making you dinner while you’re prying tiles from the kitchen floor, so it’s hot and ready when you finally get home.  They also give you actual money to help you make it all happen (Kickstarter!)

2) It requires an equally awesome team.  The stressful, confusing, exciting, exhilarating, and nauseating experience of opening a restaurant is best experienced in the company of others, especially the others who are going through all of the same emotions.  The team is more than that though.  The team fills in where you can’t and picks up the pieces you accidentally dropped.  The team compliments and complements you, both vital to sanity and well-rounded plans of action.

For these reasons, the Lucky Luna crew feels pretty darn lucky.

Since we embarked on this venture we have learned a lot about ourselves and each other.  We all have experience opening restaurants for other people, but adding our own blood, sweat and tears AND  money, ideas, creativity and heart, is in an entirely different dimension.  The stakes are higher, but the rewards are greater, too.  Not monetary rewards (no one goes into the restaurant biz for that!), but rather the types that come with the satisfaction of molding and shaping a vision into a reality that incorporates the ethics, the ideas, and the talents you and your team possess into this beautiful thing that is finally free to exist outside of your imagination.

We’re still at the molding stage, the sweaty (and sometimes bloody and tear-filled) stage of the process but we get glimpses of the end here and there. And it looks pretty.

We thank all of you who have shared in the process with us.  We are stronger, smarter and happier people because of you and Lucky Luna is one step closer to being a reality each and every day thanks to you.  We have almost hit our Kickstarter goal of 28k!  You all have made this possible! THANK YOU!!!

Keep sharing, keep liking ( and contributing 😉  ) with 4 days left to make the final push!! It’s all or nothing folks!

🙂

XOXO

Do-It-Yourself

It’s been a big week for the Lucky Luna crew.

We made a few trips to Hartsdale to start working with a DIY (Do-it-yourself) program to build our bar and back bar.  We have the hard work ethics and creativity juices flowing a plenty, but carpentry skills … could be a wee bit more developed.  It has been a great and challenging experience— from picking out the wood to literally making the cuts to form the bar.  We chose a beautiful Ambrosia Maple.  The once normal maple tree is infested with the little ambrosia beetle that burrows and tunnels through the wood, leaving these watercolor-like stains in its wake.  The tree is then susceptible to a spalt fungus, which combined with the beetle’s traces, creates unique and intricate ink-like blue, black, pink and purple swirls and splashes.

Ambitious and enthusiastic, we plunged right in.  But like most anything that is worth it, the process always takes longer than you’d think.  Even still, being outdoors, amidst the changing leaves and crisp autumn air, while hard work, has been a welcome respite of sorts to the city runnings to Home Depot and departments of this and that, procuring all of the equipment, certificates and permits and applications necessary to open doors.

And we haven’t been the only busy ones.  Our awesome team has been working at lightning speed to get the brick and mortar outfitted with a new ceiling and solid and sturdy frame for our bar top.

Last but certainly not least, we have passed the halfway point for our Kickstarter campaign!  It’s thrilling and encouraging to have received so much support and love.  The scary part is the fact that if we do not hit our goal of 28k, we will NOT receive ANYTHING 😦  We are over halfway to meeting it with only 11 days left!!!!

We are simply asking that our friends, family and fans continue to share our story and campaign. No contribution is too small (or too big!).  We have also added another prize tier! Our hoodies have gotten so much love, we decided to offer them as a full on reward.  Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and Twitter, too!

THANKS EVERYONE!!!

XOXO

Moving along…

Friends, family, and fans!

This past week has been great! Full of progress, surprises, and tons of continued support— emotional, financial, and creative! A heaving heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone!

For those of you awesome people who follow us on Instagram or Twitter, you know that last week we (finally) got the keys to Lucky Luna’s new home and began the construction/remodeling process.  We have continued this process and now have the framework for the bar being built, the ceiling getting some sound-proofing, new plumbing and electrical outfits, and much more!  We also, as many of you know, received a pleasant surprise with a shout out on Grub Street

The next few weeks will see even more changes structurally, but also internally as we fine-tune our plan of action and continue to promote and to tell the world we are coming!  We are also continuing our “getting to know you” process with our Greenpoint neighbors.  Every day we are greeted by locals peeking their heads in, peering in gaps in the windows and stopping for cheerful chats while we’re sitting on the front steps, asking us what’s in store for their block.

To say the least, every day that we have these interactions, we confirm we have made the right choice in choosing a location at 167 Nassau Avenue.  We have also been relishing in Greenpoint’s delicious Polish fair from stuffed cabbages and tripe soups to tasty pastries and cold Tyskie beer 🙂

And the scenery is as beautiful and charming as its residents.  McGlorick Park is our new favorite people watching and quick nap-grabbing spot for us to savor the last warm days of fall.

Enjoy some of the pics we have captured of the last week!

It’s all happening now…

Friends, family, and fans!

What a crazy ride it has been so far to make Lucky Luna a reality, and we couldn’t have done it without you!

For those of you awesome people who follow us on Instagram or Twitter, you know that this week we (finally) got the keys to Lucky Luna’s new home and have begun the construction/remodeling process.  It’s been quite cathartic to get out some pent up tension by hammering and crow-barring away old tiles, fixtures, and whatnot.  It’s also been a great bonding experience for us, our new neighbors, and landlord 🙂

With that said, we are (finally) announcing our location!

We couldn’t be happier to find our niche at 167 Nassau Avenue in Brooklyn! The residents are a tightknit group and truly charming.  We are overjoyed at the interest shown in our restaurant and the welcoming reception we have received from neighbors who engage us in a friendly chat as they pass by when we emerge for a gulp of fresh air. And of course, we are equally excited to learn more about Polish culture and the rest of the Greenpoint/Williamsburg hood!

The road ahead is still a long one, but the progress made thus far leaves us hopeful, optimistic, and inspired to push on through.  It’s all about the process!
