Mexican Independence Day

Independence Day celebrates the day Miguel Hidalgo is believed to have made the cry for independence (El Grito de la Independencia) in the town of Dolores, in the north-central part of the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Hidalgo was one of the nation’s leaders during the War of Independence in Mexico. There is no scholarly agreement on what was exactly said by Hidalgo, but his speech, also known as the cry of Dolores (el Grito de Dolores), was made on September 16, 1810 to motivate people to revolt against the Spanish regime. Hidalgo’s army fought against the Spanish soldiers in the fight for independence, but he was captured and executed on July 30, 1811. Mexico’s independence was not declared until September 28, 1821.

Join us in celebration with sweet specials on Mexicali beer, Montelobos mezcal, and mezcal-inspired cocktails! Of course we’ll pair these bevies with some tasty food deals, too. Plus, we’ll have some old school luchador movies rolling and maybe a surprise or two….. ¡Oralé!

ART Opening Reception for Jason Palmeri

Jason Palmeri is a Brooklyn based artist inspired by the beauty of urban chaos. His professional experience includes photography, printmaking, and mural painting. Current works of his have been shown in both group and solo shows throughout NYC. Influenced by pop art and street art culture, Palmer uses mostly found materials such as leftover house paint and spray paint to begin a process of drip work, layering, and scraping of vibrant colors that prep his canvas. This first step creates a back drop reminiscent of well worn city walls covered in decades of graffiti. Over these abstract landscapes he paints imagery evocative of the difficulties and triumphs associated with city living. The accessibility and humor of his ever evolving style offset the often dark subject matter of his paintings.

Join us as we welcome Jason and his art to Lucky Luna with drink specials and sweet jams. You’ll also have the chance to hear Jason talk about his art and be the first to get your hands on his new stuff. More info to follow.
